405 (Spooktober): Frame-ous Last Words! (NIGHTMARE FRMAES, Day 1)
(Thanks to WireBrain for suggesting!) Okay, I love the premise of this retro-style point and click horror adventure (a bit reminiscent of John Carpenter's excellent CIGARETTE BURNS). You play as Alan Goldberg, a screenwriter in 1980s Hollywood who dreams of writing Oscar-worthy dramas but instead is stuck writing slasher movies. The game has plenty of references to people and horror movies of the era, sometimes poking fun at the genre.
Alan starts out investigating the suicide of a studio executive who had been interested in his more highbrow scripts, trying to understand why someone with wealth and power would kill themselves. The trail leads Alan to a Z-grade production company, and in the meantime, he has to help an aged 1920s child actor and the actress/waitress whom he recently offended on a date find work, while chatting with cult members, makeup geniuses, sleazebag photographers, and annoying fanzine writers. Alan then gets introduced to someone powerful and mysterious, who speaks of a lost horror film. The most disturbing horror film ever made . . .
The horror is pretty tame so far, but the game promises to be a slow buildup. The characters and story are quite fun, especially for horror movie fans. This is going to be a fun Spooktober game (probably better than Shadows: Price of Our Sins, which I'd promised to play but can't get working!)
As someone who went to school for screenwriting, I can't help appreciating the irony of playing ag ame where everyone looks down ont he screenwriter--right after the WGA won big following their strike.
