408: How The West Was 'LONE IN THE DARK 3 (day 1)

In the years since playing this game, I'd forgotten how wonderfully weird it can be (right from the intro, which I swear breaks the fourth weall). And how inscrutable sometimes. Just try every item or action avialable, I guess!
Private eye Edward Carnby is hired to investigate the disappearence of a film crew from a ghost town, with his friend Emily Hartwood among the missing. Upon arrival, a ghostly figure dynamites the bridge, trapping Carnby in the town of Slaughter Gulch. Watching murders on film and using player pianos with uncanny abilities is all well and good, but once we get to the snakes is when the real surprises begin.
Carnby learns about Jed Stone, the evil founder of Slaughter Gulch and leader of the undead gunslingers, and finds out that Emily is still alive somewhere. Carnby plays at being Lash Larue and Santa Clause, fills in for Drizly, exploits doorways in combat, gives something scaly the eye, and lets one tough customer keep the change. He meets floating granite slabs, hungry vultures, and a foul photophobic freak of nature. The Native American spirits, whose graveyards Jed Stone desecrated, lend Carnby supernatural aid.
I run into a couple of game bugs and also have to look up hints several times. Sometimes because I didn't notice something, other times because I just can't figure out this game's logic. (Punch this think you can't see clearly? Shoot this random door? Use this bag of scorpions??) I only remember bits and pieces. I do like it more than AITD 2. Having played Resident Evil, I think I spot little ways that it was influenced by this one. Of course chat and I tease the game about its weirdness sometimes. At least they got rid of the jumping sequences after AITD 1; I wouldn't look forward to managing those again!
