47 Meters Down: Uncaged - Movie Review
"47 Meters Down: Uncaged" (2019) directed again by Johannes Roberts is an unwarranted sequel that fails to reach the heights of it's predecessor. It does however feature a very cool location and if you are into cave diving you will be happy.
A group of young women ditch their original safe tourist plans to go cave diving. While underwater, one of the girls defies their originally agreed plan and goes deeper than what was considered safe. They go after her and discover sharks that have adapted to hunt without eyesight. They knock down a pillar which traps them in the sunken city unless they can find another way out before they run out of oxygen or a shark eats them.
47 Meters Down 2 is unwarranted because they're not actually 47 meters below this time! Jokes aside, I felt nothing except the location choice was working for me personally, and I was not having as great of a time as I did with the previous film. While the characters were less naive this time, they were equally if not more stupid and it also doesn't help that only 1 of the 4 girls were root-worthy in terms of personality. A mark of a great survival scenario horror film is whether you as a viewer want the characters to survive or not, and these 3 brats were both annoying and dumb, so I didn't care whether they lived or died which means the tension becomes broken and stakes are lowered.
The message of both of these films in my eyes is "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes." Also your oxygen tank will last way longer when you're making a movie and you have temporary plot armor. The horror was completely inneffective to me, as the sharks looked dreadfully poor this time (I actually thought they looked pretty good in the previous film), and there are stupid CGI jump scares left and right which had no effect on me whatsoever, even attempting to do a scare with the tiny little cute cave fish. While the backstories of the characters in the previous film were pretty weak and surface leveled, this one was actually worse in my opinion, I felt the step sister dynamic was pointless and the mean girl / bullying stuff also pointless.
47 Meters Down: Uncaged is a weird sequel for many reasons. The only connection it has to the previous film is that it's also taking place in Mexico, but honestly it might as well be titled something else entirely.
