The first stage of the battle is between Spyro and Ripto and takes place on the arena floor on top of the castle of Winter Tundra. Spyro must dodge Ripto's attacks while collecting orbs before he does. When Spyro collects three orbs he can use a special attack, which damages Ripto. Ripto's only attack, without the orbs, is to shoot fireballs from his sceptor. Note that on his own, Spyro's attacks cannot harm Ripto. He only jumps and yells, "NO!"

The second stage of the battle is basically the same except this time Ripto is on Robot Gulp and he is slightly harder. It is a good idea to get them (the orbs) before Robot Gulp does, as the he can harness a lot of power from them. Robot Gulp then explodes as he gets defeated, and Ripto falls off him.

After this, Spyro moves onto the final stage of the battle. Ripto turns a gold orb into a giant robotic bird (very similar to the ones from Gulp's Overlook and Skelos Badlands), destroys the arena floor (converted into a huge lava pool), and Spyro must fight Ripto as he flies on the back of a giant robotic bird. Spyro eventually defeats Ripto with his superflame powerup.
Ripto (リプトー Riputō in Japanese)

Spyro is known for being courageous, headstrong, eager and arrogant. He has an immutable sense of heroism, friendliness, and has a fiery personality. He has little concern for his own safety and can be irresponsible at times, being extremely curious and hardly ever cautious, which could get him into trouble. Spyro gets into lots of mischief and is known to be cocky, a trait that can lead to his downfall. He has become much more arrogant after the events of Spyro: Year of the Dragon, and in more recent outings, has actually denied help to those who did not expressly indicate that they would award him. Despite this, he still saves the world, even if it is not willingly.

Background
Spyro the Dragon and his dragonfly partner Sparx, having enough with the continuous raining in Artisans and wondering when the sun will come out, decide to take a vacation to Dragon Shores. Upon going through the portal, however, Spyro ends up in the fantasy realm of Avalar, having been summoned there by Elora the Faun, Hunter the Cheetah, and the Professor. They explain that whilst experimenting with a large portal device, they inadvertently summoned an iron-fisted warlock known as Ripto, along with his minions Crush and Gulp. Pleased to find himself in a world without dragons whom he views as pests, Ripto decided to conquer Avalar, prompting Elora and the others to summon a dragon to fight against him. Currently stranded in Avalar as a result of Ripto destroying the portal he came in through, Spyro agrees to help fight against him, gathering up talismans from the various realms of Avalar in order to confront and defeat Crush and Gulp. Ripto then manages to steal a power crystal, which was used to power the large portal device, which he uses to create a new scepter for himself (Gulp had eaten the original scepter in the intro by mistake), but Spyro manages to defeat him as well. With peace returned to Avalar, Elora and the others fix the portal device, allowing Spyro to take his long-awaited vacation to Dragon Shores.
