2Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a Turn Based Strategy Game co-developed by Sega and Media-Vision and likewise published by Sega where although it continuous the numbered title in the main franchise series, its story is chronologically told simultaneously with the other titles of the main series which depicts the main war that occurred between the Federation and the Empire during the Second Europan War. In here, you will be using Squad E of the elite Ranger Corps of the Federation led by Squad Commander Claude Wallace and together with his childhood friends Kai and Raz. While following their story, battles and hardships, you will see the real story that happened which led to the actual end of the Second Europan War and unveil the dark secrets both sides hide in order to win the war at any cause.
A game which is a welcome return of the franchise in the main console and garnered a favorable review which ranges from 81-84 in various platforms in Metacritic wherein praise was given to a return to its classic strategy mechanics which was introduced by the first title and further improving the said already great mechanic by making it simpler, more balanced and much more welcoming to beginners. Its art style and graphics were also one of its strengths. However, not all is good as its storytelling and plot was the crux of its criticisms where it was noted that the delivery of its story is predictable and stereotypical in war stories as well as its characters which only followed classic Anime tropes. Still though, the game still managed to receive positive feedback overall from both the critics and gamers.
As for me, I agree with the strengths of the game. The game is more balanced although it became easier and much more forgiving than the first Valkyria game. I also really liked the added Squad Stories of the game which are special stories that focuses on the other playable characters in the game (which are those that don’t come out typically in cutscenes). As for the story and characters, although I agree it used typical stories in war movies or games, the delivery is was delivered smoothly because of its characters that are compatible with each other despite varied personalities. It also gave a good balance of drama and funny moments which are good ice breakers for a game sometimes too serious. Overall, I really recommend this game for all who has no problem with anime-ish games and fans of strategy games. I guarantee that this is one of the best out there in its genre.
