Going from last year, this is really more of what I'd consider "the norm" when I think of seven-day roguelikes: tile-based (because it's easy to think in and of), fairly obvious mechanics, a readme for controls (ideally with few commands so you're not overwhelmed), fast-paced gameplay, and plenty of flexibility as to the player's direction. That doesn't mean that game that exceed this expectation aren't still great, nor does it mean that this is an "average" game. Design speaks volumes too, and the concept of what seems to be a roguelike-converted "Magic: The Gathering" spell system is awesome.
It says something when I enjoy the game enough to try and finish it up, no? To be fair, when the end seems like it's in sight, it's hard NOT to aim for it, and some games don't have one of those. It just so happened that this one did, so yeah.
