7th Saga - Cart - Ultra Low Level Run - Part 8: Killing Pison, One More Time with Feeling
In this video I clean up the majority of the frozen continent up to Monmo, who will have to be his own video. This part consists of 22 segments.
To start off I head immediately to face Mega-Pison, returned from hell itself. Metallo-Pison is a fairly interesting boss. The game knows that you're going to be silenced at this point, so it gives you two completely physical bosses in your path, Mighty-Pison or Monmo. For the purposes of this low level run this is a relief, since boss magic is far more dangerous.
That said, Meteor-Pison is a real tank. He has one of the highest physical attacks of any boss in the game, stronger than Foma, and his use of Defense 1 makes him comparable to any endgame boss in terms of HP. The only thing that makes Meatier-Pison easier than those other bosses is your access to the Water Rune, an unlimited healing pool.
Reaching Mahjong-Pison isn't too bad. The two-Manrot battle in this cave is a blessing, and for some reason I have really good luck escaping the 3-Wyrock battle even though the run formula says I shouldn't. I can never escape the three-Sagats without a B.Agility, though, and I burn one here.
Unlike the previous few bosses, Man-Pison is actually easier in his first phase before he runs out of MP, so I try to do as much damage during those turns as possible. The more MPCatchers he lands on you the better, to draw out phase 1. After that the boss strategy becomes straightforward, making sure MudaMudaMuda-Pison only ever hits Valsu while he's defending whenever possible. MagicalGirl-Pison can still OHKO Valsu on a crit and a high roll, but that only happens once early in the fight, at 5:50. This allows me to come away from this fight using only a single M.Water, which is decent under any circumstances and is especially fantastic at level 15/14.
I make two big mistakes in this fight, but the game doesn't punish me for either of them. The first is on turn 1. I assumed all of MildMannered-Pison's "attack" turns I had teased out were actually Defense 1 castings, because most of them are. Apparently I missed one that was definitely an attack, so I leave Valsu open to a blow. Graciously, he dodged. The second mistake is around 19:20. I get overly aggressive here and have Lux attack on a turn after Valsu has been hit. Once I got myself into this situation there was absolutely nothing I could do to get out of it, but once more Valsu dodges. This dodge is actually less miraculous than the first one, as it's after Valsu's B.Agility, but it's far more clutch happening this late in the fight. After this scare I play it safe the rest of the way. Valsu absorbs a low-roll crit around 20:37.
At 22:50 I finally land the killing blow.
With Monochromatic-Pison out of the way I'd like to run and grab the Moonlight, however I can't risk being wiped by Bob Sagats. Instead I Exigate to regroup and save.
23:42 I work to finish off Lux's current level. I'm doing this in Melenam now to get extra Opal drops and milk all of the money out of the game I can before heading to the Past.
26:05 Lux reaches level 16.
After this I stock up on a few extra B.Agility so I can use them to help in reaching the Moonlight.
27:26 I make the trip through the Cave of Silence for the Moonlight, grabbing a couple of other chests worth 100G items along the way. Valsu dies early, costing me some gold. At that point I stop trying in earnest, but Lux makes a long series of highly unlikely first-turn escapes, salvaging the run. The gold lost on resurrecting Valsu was saved in B.Agility not used, so it all worked out.
31:33 I spend some time playing with the boy in Dowaine. If you can get this kid to give you a Pearl and a Potion 3, and then only other items that are worth 100G, he's essentially a free source of Potion 3s. I mess up on the first cycle, falsely thinking B.Fires are worth 100G when actually they only cost 20G.
32:07 I stop by Pang and pick up all of the remaining free Potion 2s.
33:03 I get my curse removed so I can finally cast spells once more.
After a couple more rounds with the boy in Dowaine, I stock up on B.Fires in preparation for Monmo. This will ultimately prove to be a waste.
37:30 I head back into the Cave of Silence for the Pr.Seed.
40:48 I head into the Cave of Kapel for the M.Seed, then perform follow-up trips at 44:41, 47:09, and 48:50 for the remaining chests.
50:21 I kill off Lux in order to finally bridge the XP gap between him and Valsu. I have Valsu farm Swords one on one, getting a Sword drop each time for bonus cash.
54:50 Valsu gains level 15. This was actually a mistake. I was thinking Hermits gave me 13XP still and was trying to get Valsu within one kill of leveling, but forgot to factor in Lux being dead. This would have cost me a Sword, but amazingly Valsu gets the stats I need on the first level up. I lost track of the hours, but the next ten minutes or so of video took me over two weeks to capture.
1:07:05 Valsu gains level 16, learning MPCatcher.
