A playthrough of the hidden character Lizardman in the arcade version of Namco’s SoulCalibur/Soul Calibur 1.

Lizardman is the most consistent hidden character in the whole franchise, for what good that’s worth. I do love that we went from believable, realistic settings with a touch of the supernatural, to suddenly going full D’n’D for some reason. I didn’t even realise what a bizarre contrast that was until I was writing that just now; SoulEdge was surprisingly grounded, especially compared to later titles.

Lizardman is a derivative of Sophitia, taking many of her moves, but he also has some of his own as with most of the model-swaps, such as his lunging forward charge attack. He’s quick, combo-juggles relatively easily, and, on the whole, is a pretty competent character. Definitely more on the spammy side than most (just like Sophitia herself), but he’s certainly a viable if slightly chaotic character to use. I really love that double-flip-kick combo of his (uf+K, K) which not only takings off quite a bit of life but just looks really awesome too. He also has this great unblockable (uf+1+2) which can be charged for additional damage and makes him pounce on the enemy like a move out of one of the Golden Axe games. Indeed, you can tell they wanted to go the more fantastic route from this game onward.

You also have to love that hilarious, dopey face of his. Reptile characters always seem to end up with hilarious faces in these games, and it won’t be the last we see of those either.

Anyway, Lizardman is good on the whole. A nice, wacky addition to the series who we’ll get to see a few more times.
