#898 SoulCalibur I (ARC) Hidden Characters (8/8): Edge Master playthrough.
A playthrough of the hidden character Edge Master in the arcade version of Namco’s SoulCalibur/Soul Calibur 1.
It’s not quite a Namco game without a roulette/Mokujin-type character, and SoulCalibur gives us that in the form of Edge Master. Silly name aside, I actually quite like this character. Admittedly he looks like something more out of DnD than Soul Blade, but as I’ve said before that was sort of the route they were trying to go with this game. Edge Master switches styles from round to round, and match to match, just like Mokujin does in the Tekken series, and as a result he is technically a playable form of Inferno. Indeed, this was rather genius on Namco’s part to have a playable variant of the boss, but have them be a whole different character with their own personality and plotline. Edge Master doesn’t get much of either ultimately, but it’s worth noting at least that he is the mentor of Kilik, a point which will be important to remember for a certain later game in the series. Although, Edge Master training Kilik in all styles of combat sounds much more like something out of the The Water Margin than Journey To The West, but whatever. Edge Master serves the purpose he’s intended for well, and I do like the inclusion of a roulette character with a bit more personality for once. With him appearing in only one game (technically), it also makes him an obscurer character and therefore rather fascinating to some. Or, rather, probably used to be more so before Youtube made looking up obscure hidden characters very easy. But someone has to chart the uncharted I suppose.
That wraps it for the hidden characters in this game, but the arcade version of SoulCalibur I still has a couple of interesting oddities to cover.
