A playthrough of the hidden character Yoshimitsu in the arcade version of Namco’s SoulCalibur/Soul Calibur 1.

Hmm. A character from another franchise appearing in a SoulCalibur game. Hold that thought, it’ll be important later.

So, yeah, Yoshimitsu is here. Playing this in the arcades for the first time back in the day (having extensively played SoulEdge and Tekken 3), seeing Yoshimitsu for the first time was pretty mindblowing to me. Nowadays it’s standard knowledge of course, but a crossover back then seemed like such a stroke of genius. Then again, they always do at the time. Not so much later on.

I do love how much they actually keep of Yoshimitsu’s moveset here. His launching knee, his spin kick, his spinning fist strikes, his pogoing. Hell, even his db+2 slash is here! It’s not half-bad either, doing some pretty decent damage, particularly in a counter.

Yoshimitsu definitely has a bit of Mitsurugi’s moveset in him (as you’d expect in a game so full of clone characters) but he’s unique enough to still stand on his own. His inclusion by Namco was a brilliant move on their part, but that obsession of loaning characters from other franchises…well, that turned out less well, and to this day somewhat overshadows the franchise itself.

I had a bit of trouble with Yoshimitsu in the Inferno boss battle here. As I’ve said before, I do find his moveset a bit odd and oblique (as it is somewhat supposed to be), and as a result I had difficulty in timing my strikes on that bag of hot air, meaning that he kept clobbering me into the ground repeatedly. It happens, I guess. Inferno can be surprisingly difficult at times, but it’s mostly down to his AI rather than his moves, making him strangely balanced as a boss on the whole. You know, back when Namco actually cared about making balanced bosses.

Anyway, I think Yoshimitsu was a great addition to the franchise on the whole. In particular, he was definitely great as a shock-value hidden character; an art so sadly lost nowadays.

Lastly, you could also just assume this is ancient Wild Card or something if you wanted, I don’t think anyone would really care.
