#904 SoulCalibur II (GCN) Hidden Characters (1/8): Cervantes playthrough.
Gameplay of the hidden character Cervantes in the Nintendo Gamecube port of Namco’s SoulCalibur II/Soul Calibur 2.
The former boss returns once again as a hidden character…and I couldn’t personally tell many differences between this appearance and the previous one. He seems to have a few new moves, but that’s about it. The only real thing of note about Cervantes here is that his psycho-crusher-esque move nearly always seems to get blocked by the AI, making a one cool move now relatively useless, although it does recover in the later titles.
One nice thing I do get to show off is the return of weapon selection in this game. In Weapon Master Mode, the Edge Master Mode of this game, you progress through a series of stages over a world map and along the way unlock the ability to purchases new weapons for each character. As you can see, they end up with a wide variety; each weapon having its benefits and its drawbacks. As you can see with Cervantes’ Soul Edge (complete) here, it steadily drains his health, but deals stellar damage and recovers his health considerably with each hit, making it an interesting high-risk, high-reward weapon. Certainly, an interesting choice to make.
Another thing to note is that Inferno does actually have his special moves from the DC port of SC1 in this game, but no matter what I did I couldn’t seem to access them for some reason. You’ll see him use one of them in the Inferno fight here, which is cool, but I couldn’t figure out how to use them when playing as him for some reason.
Next up, Mina returns once again.
