#911 SoulCalibur II (GCN) Hidden Characters (8/8): Lizardman playthrough.
Gameplay of the hidden character Lizardman in the Nintendo Gamecube port of Namco’s SoulCalibur II/Soul Calibur 2.
The Sophitia clone returns, although unlike Sophitia I actually found Lizardman here really useful. I didn’t play the Dreamcast version of SoulCalibur 1 until 2010 (though I did play it back in the arcades in the early 2000s) so I never really remembered Lizardman being a proper character in that game. As a result, seeing him become a staple character again from this game onward was pretty odd to me. That said, later games in the franchise still have generic lizardmen to fight, so the series established that these lot are a bunch of pests.
Lizardman is really good here though. He’s great in SCIII, and pretty decent in SCIV as well, but here you can see his aggressive take on Sophitia’s moveset really starting to take form. He has some combos with nice range and good damage, some good launching attacks, a few air juggles at his disposal, and some other good combo attacks, such as my favourite where he does an overhead swipe before charging into the enemy. This not only tends to catch them off guard, but knocks them back towards a wall or towards the edge of the arena, with other being very useful. Indeed, despite a pretty generic DnD type design, Lizardman is one of the better playing characters in the series, which makes his continuous appearances as a hidden character one of the greater delights of covering this franchise. Not a bad character at all but, just like with Hwang and Rock, a bit underdeveloped for what they could and indeed should have been. Notably, Lizardman is the only partially-playable character who has voices for the versus screen, which makes sense as he doesn’t have any “true” lines, just reptilian grunts.
That ends it for the hidden characters in this game. Next up…well, it’s time to move onto one of the most controversial yet iconic parts of the SoulCalibur series; the guest characters.
