#908 SoulCalibur II (GCN) Hidden Characters (5/8): Charade playthrough.
Gameplay of the hidden character Charade in the Nintendo Gamecube port of Namco’s SoulCalibur II/Soul Calibur 2.
Namco decided to change the roulette character from title to title in this series, for reasons I’m still not entirely sure of. I think it was a way to make sure that every game had something unique to come back to, or it could just be laziness on their part that they would think of a new character, but couldn’t be bothered to develop a unique moveset for them, so they just made them a roulette-character instead. My money is on the latter, personally.
I actually really like Charade’s design; it’s weirdly strong for such a basic design, and his bizarre and mysterious nature definitely makes him one of the more intriguing anomalies in the series. Charade has no individual weapons of his own, but by playing as him in Extra Arcade Mode he will not only have a randomised moveset each time, but also a randomised weapon. This was not the best idea however…as I continuously get stuck with the joke weapons, which are meant to be a handicap and so put me at quite a disadvantage. Indeed, in this mode it’s a real roll of the dice as to what you get, but I can’t deny that the random nature of it is pretty fun, especially with the ended chance of getting either a very good or very shitty weapon. An interesting idea, it must be said. Another thing of note was that, as Inferno couldn’t copy a mimic character, he started off the fight with SoulCalibur! I thought that was a pretty cool tidbit, all things considered, and indeed most Namco games have a few little bonuses like that.
We will get to see Charade again, though not in any unofficial capacity. SoulCalibur III is a weird, weird game, and Charade’s appearance/s there are going to provide a good example of that. Next, however, we still have some weirdness here left to see as we move onto the exclusive hidden characters of this title.
