A playthrough of the hidden character Tengu in Team Ninja/Tecmo’s Dead or Alive 4/DOA4.

Of all the characters to be most consistently hidden in this series, it just had to be Tengu didn’t it. He’s also the time-consuming character to unlock in this game too, requiring the player to complete Time Attack mode with all 16 starting characters as well as the 5 characters unlocked through story mode. Do all that, and you’ll unlock Tengu. I managed to kill two birds with one stone here however by recording the mandatory playthroughs I needed to do with the hidden characters in order to unlock Tengu, meaning that I was able to do his straight after the others.

Tengu isn’t too different here. Surprise surprise. The only major difference you’ll notice with him is that his wind slash projectile is gone; in its place is a rather useless charging body slam attack, which I never personally found much of a use for. Otherwise, his moveset is pretty unchanged from the previous games. He has most of the same moves, even most of the same combos, although there are many a few different variations here and there.

I complained back a few videos ago that Alpha-152 was worst to fight against with certain characters rather than others. Tengu is a good example of that. His style is quite slow and methodical, which suited DOA2 and 2U, but really doesn’t suit the much more fast-paced nature of DOA4. Even his running attacks are rather slow and susceptible to being countered. What does this mean? Well, it means me having the worst time against Alpha-152 I’ve had in a fairly long time. Tengu simply isn’t that great against her, not have the powerful running/rushing attacks which are simply required to take her down with ease, and soon turning the match against her into a slogfest as I desperately attempt to find some coherent strategy against her. I didn’t really care for Tengu here, it must be said. Never really been a character I cared too much for. Luckily, this is the last time he’s actually in the series, and the last vid I actually have to do on him. Next time, I move onto the rather beloved Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, and get to cover easily the best game in the entire series as well as being able to finally cover some bosses again.
