A playthrough of the boss and hidden character Tengu in Team Ninja’s Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate.

SING FOR THE TEARS

If you don’t quite get my reference there, for some reason this game’s intro contains, I shit you not, the song “Dream on” by Aerosmith. I mean, sure, it’s a great song…but why is it in a Dead or Alive game of all things? It’s so jarring. It’d be like having Walk This Way in KOF, or Rats in the Cellar in Tekke- actually, best not to give Harada any ideas. Not after that whole Snoop Dogg thing.

Moving on for a second though, this is Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate, a brilliant remake of Dead or Alive 2 based on the DOA 3 engine. Yes, I know this is a little anachronistic to cover, as it’s technically after DOA3 yet not really, but it seemed to fit the best for the chronology. This is basically DOA2.5, and it’s a pretty strong game I must say. I actually really enjoy DOA3, which is easily my favourite in the series, and them using that brilliant engine to make a fantastic remake of DOA2 (which I’ve grown to be quite bored of personally) was a stroke of brilliance on Team Ninja’s part.

So, what was their reason for doing this? Presumably, it was to get DOA3 fans reacquainted with the rest of the series so that they could fully enjoy DOA4, which came out the following year on the X360. Indeed, I’ll say this for Team Ninja, it was a pretty great idea. Ultimate was a bundle with DOA Ultimate 1, which is a graphically-upgraded version of the Saturn port of DOA1 (sort-of), while Ultimate 2 is the remake you see here. As a result, that mean you can effectively play all five main DOA titles solely on the Xbox 360, as DOA Ultimate and DOA3 are backwards compatible. This was a great move in hindsight, and an example of series cohesiveness I’ve only otherwise seen in the God of War series, where every single one of its entries (the Greek-focussed games anyway) can be played on the PS3.

DOA1 Ultimate is hot garbage on the whole, and so I won’t be covering it. You can’t even use the analog stick with it! DOA2 Ultimate on the other hand is absolutely brilliant. I’ll get more into this in a few videos time, but DOA3’s engine is just fantastic. It looks absolutely beautiful, movement and attacks are incredibly fluid and in general it just feels so much more realised over DOA2. Indeed, it’s where the series really starts to come together, but I’ll get more into it when I get onto the game itself.

So, Tengu returns as the boss of this game. Is he different in any way? Not from what I could tell, no. The only real difference is that the CPU version of Tengu has an exclusive move where he distracts the player by changing the season of the stage he fights on, which is exclusive to this game. It more or less just looks like a way to show off how beautiful the engine is, but I won’t deny it’s pretty unique for a boss. Otherwise, really not too different. Very much a video for the sake of thoroughness, but I do at least get to show Tengu’s special throw here (hcf + P+H).

This game is easily the most definitive way to play DOA2, which is a bit of a shame as it’s not actually emulatable. It is basically just “DOA2 but in DOA3’s style”, but that makes it a great improvement on an already good game.

Next up, that other character I covered in DOA2.

Also, if you’re wondering, I chose that profile name because I didn’t expect it to actually appear during gameplay. Perhaps the worst part of all is that it’s actually somewhat appropriate, considering one of the events in DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball 3.
