In Secret of Mana for the SNES, there's a way to permanently upgrade your sword to its ultimate form: The Mana Sword. This trick is commonly called the 9th Sword Orb Glitch, and here's the easiest way to do it.

WARNING: I have heard that this glitch can sometimes corrupt your save data, so be careful when attempting this on the Super Nintendo console!

First and foremost, you'll need to upgrade your sword to its eighth form, the Dragon Buster (or at least you'll need 8 Sword's Orbs already). Next, make your way to the Neko standing in the Frosty Forest, and save your game. Now, simultaneously hit L, R, Select, and Start to soft reset your game.

The next step is to immediately start a new game, and play until you reach the Mantis Ant boss. He's the very first boss of the game, and it should only take you a few minutes.

Now, just BEFORE the fight with the Mantis Ant begins, Elliott (the obnoxious kid NPC) will say some line of dialogue about "You have a sword, don't you?" During this dialogue box, hit L, R, Select, and Start simultaneously, and HOLD THEM ALL for a solid five seconds to soft reset.

Now immediately load up the file you saved at the Frosty Forest. If you did everything right, your party should be fighting against the Mantis Ant boss. Now smack him good. When he explodes, he will give you a Sword's Orb. This is the 9th sword orb, and it's normally unobtainable.

Smash through the ensuing text, and fly out of town (or walk) to go find a Watts who can upgrade your weapons. Ask him to upgrade your sword, and voila! You now have The Mana Sword, which is stupidly powerful, and you're not supposed to have it before the final battle.
