How Material Drops Work:
Whenever the game spawns an ore and rolls for its quality, it will roll for legendary first - then epic if fail - then rare if fail - then uncommon if fail - spawn common if all fail.
The number of ore spawns and the chance of rolling each tier increases as you kill more bosses (more precisely based on the "percentage progression"). It is pretty much 0% before the first set of boss spawns and caps out at 10%/14%/20%/20% for legendary/epic/rare/uncommon when the last set of bosses spawn. At this cap value, here are the actual chance of each type of materials from an ore:
10% legendary
12.6% epic
15.48% rare
12.384% uncommon
49.536% common
There is no need to go look for the ores to break them. They do not "block" spawns (even if the whole map is covered by ores). Moreover, once you complete the map, everything on the map is broken automatically and gets picked up.
