At the start of 2013, I was a young 20-year-old who had recently graduated with a Bachelor of Music. The problem was that I had no idea what to do with that or whether my degree had any value in the real world. I liked the idea of making YouTube videos; why would I go through the trouble of gigging when I could create online content from my home that could be watched 24/7 by people all around the world? That was my thinking at the time…
2013 YouTube was an entirely different beast to 2023 YouTube. Smosh was the most subscribed YouTube chanel… I hadn’t yet heard of a Pewdiepie… TikTok’s predecessor Musical.ly hadn’t even entered the scene yet... But what did exist were glorious music covers! I was a fan of Eric Calderone’s “Meets Metal” series where he would take shred popular music and soundtracks on his guitar. I was totally blown away by Eric’s skill in performance and arrangement, but when I watched his videos I would also think, “I could do that… but in a Joe way…”
One day I took myself to the beach with a notebook and pen in hand and started planning it all. Weekly videos… some sort of costume… I’ll try to make 50… and it needs a theme! What can I do using a keyboard that I will enjoy, that will appeal to people and that will be logistically possible to do on a weekly basis?

And that’s how it started 😊
I had already built a humble 1000-subscriber following on YouTube and I asked them what the series should be called. A user named Henri Pink replied: “What about A-Bit of 8-Bit?”

It's been 10 years! For the 80th and final ep of A-Bit of 8-Bit I will be reremixing some of my favourite tunes from the last decade. Mario with Queen? Undertale with Harry Potter? The Beatles with Steven Universe? It's going to be LARGE. In the lead-up, I’m making these 30-second Chip Clip shorts to highlight and reflect on my favourite 8-bit moments.
