After seeing Smagumph's playthrough of this on my timeline (https://youtu.be/UdJIev33ga4) I just had to play again. I don't think I've done a run with the Fighter on youtube, yet, and when I had to spend quarters to play this game, he seemed like the least interesting character to spend them on.

He's certainly among the easiest to get started with, though, with a fast flowing ground combo, and a guard with a decently versatile counter-attack & anti-air, snappy slide & dash-attacks, and a very quick back-jump attack too. And of course, he'll make good use of the magic swords, to make up for not being able to cast spells.
