A Light, Indie, Turn Based Tactics RPG – Mystical Tactics Demo –
Mystical Tactics is an Indie, Turn Based Tactics RPG with very retro Pixel Graphics, and could be a good fit for you if you like light tactical RPGs.
Light Turn Based Tactics Combat:
There is no individual unit initiative; you go, they go, and your side always seems to go first, making the game much more predictable.
The combat in Mystical Tactics is a linked AP system.
Each default character and monster has 2 AP; this is used for both attack and movement.
Meaning: you can attack twice with most characters; as can the enemy.
This has the effect of discouraging movement, as that wastes AP best used for attacking.
Now, there are elevation bonuses to be had, granting a 20% increase to attack or defense when above your opponent, but absent special abilities, (more later) this still makes movement often not the right choice: I’ve found simply letting the enemies come to you often works best here.
Attacks also always hit here; only the damage roll is rolled; creating a very deterministic feel to the combats.
Mystical Tactics RPG:
The RPG and meaningful player choice here is present in the selection of your initial party of 3, at least it is once you manage to unlock a few, as sadly, you only start with 3 characters, to choose for your 3 man band, so, this is an area that needs some work.
Also, you make no RPG choices once you have “chosen” your 3, from the available 3, as you are unable to pick it character attribute, skills, or starting loadout at the start; indeed, you can’t even visually customize them, or even name them…
As I said, more work is needed on this front.
However, it still an RPG, albeit one with lacking initial choices.
You do gain experience for all of your characters at the end of each fight, even if they drop, which is generous.
Once they do lvl, they get to pick 1 of 3 skills to learn; Vampire Survivors style; like a repel with a spear, a 20% heal after winning a room, cover fire, overwatch, a counter attack (which you do NOT get by default) big and very powerful, run shaping abilities here.
You also get some gold after clearing a room, used at venders, fountains, and the tavern.
At the tavern, you can buy another character; 150g, and you add them to your party, and unlock them for future runs; there is a max party size of 6 here.
Each character can wear 1 weapon, 1 armor, and 2 rings.
When a characters drops to 0, they vanish from the board and are wounded; too many wounds will kill them, so be careful.
While wounded, a character has about 1/2 their normal hp.
Characters wounds can also be healed in specific rooms, or by keeping them in the reserve.
The weapons here have strict requirement who can use them, as these picky elves won’t use crossbows, and only mages use wands; stuff like that.
The Mystical Tactics World:
You fight a seemingly static battle, then pick your next room, usually a pick of 1 of 3, another Vampire Survivors influence.
This room could be either equipment, or item rooms; or a tavern, a gold room, healing, a smith, a trainer, or a market.
Healing is rare here, so try to avoid hits to the limited extend that is possible, and use those potions.
The rooms here, at least at this early state, do not seem randomized, so I shall not call this a roguelite, but the rewards for the rooms do change, adding some element of unpredictability to the runs; which is good for replay-ability.
Meta Progression:
Currently in this early demo, there are characters to unlock, 13 of them currently.
You unlock characters by hiring them in the tavern using in game gold earned in the run.
There is no apparent meta progression currency that I have seen, as the gold is use it or lose it, so spend that gold at the shops and stimulate your fantasy economy!
Controller Support is planned for the full release.
Thankfully, Mouse and Keyboard control is present and functional here; good to see that in a PC game!
Note: This is an Early look at Mystical Tactics so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Mystical Tactics is an Indie, Turn Based Tactics RPG with very retro Pixel Graphics, and could be a good fit for you if you like light tactical RPGs.
It is well worth a wishlist and a watch.
