A quick Steam Deck OLED test The Broken Land [Docked mode] A peculiar piece of abandonware
There is a lot of videos on YT with various games tested on Steam Deck. Most of them present the footage of the screen and how the game looks ON Steam Deck. Some people, however, use their Steam Deck as a desktop PC or a regular console. My tests intend to show how the game looks and performs on an external screen, in full HD (not in 4k for performance reasons) with certain scaling options.
One of my recent favorite activities with the Steam Deck has been searching for the most obscure and forgotten games and trying to launch them on my device. This is how I ended up delving into abandonware websites, looking for interesting Diablo clones. And here I am, with a title straight from Taiwan. The Broken Land is an isometric RPG developed by Ace Platinous Family Co., Ltd. and released in 2000. There is very little information about the game itself (apart from very general descriptions and a manual that is said to deviate from the actual gameplay o.O). Even Youtube doesn't have the game in its database when you want to enter the title in the video settings. It also appears that the game has a small cult following with hardcore community. Why hardcore? Well, the game is ridiculously difficult. Like on the verge of being broken. Actually, the game is kind a broken, just like in the title. Still, the gameplay itself is seemingly very simplistic, with kind of peculiar weapon/armor upgrade system that I somehow managed to understand (the game provides zero explanation to anything, including the story) but somehow you quickly get addicted and want more.
HOW TO MAKE THIS GAME TO WORK: The game is classified as abandonware and to install it, you will probably need an old PC (I wasn't able to launch the installation on Win 10, Win 7 and the Deck). In my case, I used my special-purpose PC with Windows XP, installed the game, installed the no-cd patch available on the Internet, and then copied the game folder onto Steam Deck, created a shortcut to Steam in the desktop mode and set forced compatibility with Proton Experimental.
NOTE: Bear in mind that this is recorded in the docked mode, meaning the performance might always be a bit lower than in the regular handheld mode due to the scaling, etc.
