Here is a showcase of five Diablo 2 overhaul mods that I found and threw at my Steam Deck while looking for one particular mod that I have a very vague memory of and that I played some years ago. Installing and running mods on the Steam Deck can be pretty challenging, especially when you are not familiar with console commands, proton prefixes, etc. Yet, I managed to figure out how to do it (it took me 2-3 hours, no joke) after many tests, trials and errors. Still, Steam Deck once again proved to be a fantastic device for retro gaming.
The mods featured in this presentation:
Diablo 2 Scrabble - this mod is a mixture of insane, immersion breaking mechanics that somehow are still fun to play. It basically adds a letter based system of recipes for the Horadric cube and eventually the author of the mod added a TON of crazy new features and locations, including shotguns, modern cities, new enemies as if straight from Fallout 1/2. Diablo 2 Genesis 2.0 - this is probably a mod made by the creator of the mod I was looking for (but still haven't found). Alchemic is a Polish mod creator who eventually uploaded English versions of his works. This particular mod overhauls the game to make it resemble the playstyle found in Diablo 1; we get a dungeon in the Rogue Camp that we delve into and all the locations seem to be hidden somewhere in that dungeon. Diablo 2 Le Royaume des Ombres - a mod that offers a completely new atmospheric experience that looks and feels like just a legit Diablo 2 addon but with mechanics (and graphics/sprites/icons) borrowed from Titan Quest. Diablo 2 Valhalla - long story short, this mod adds a Nordic mythology feel to Diablo 2. https://valhallamod.com/
Diablo 2 Median XL - a huge mod with YEARS of history on the modding scene. Apart from many changes in the main game itself, this mod adds an insane amount of endgame content. You can check the list of features and info about the mod here: https://www.median-xl.com/ (and btw, this mod was the most difficult to run on the Steam Deck because of its installation and the way it is launched).
NOTE: Because some of the mods ramp up the difficulty several times compared to the vanilla game, I wasn't able to show too much of the content found at the beginning of the game. Consider it more of a sneak peak but trust me, there is a lot to find in any of those 5 mods. You can see the differences in the graphics (mods that run on Diablo 2 SE are compatible with Glide, which makes the game look sharper and higher resolutions are available).
NOTE 2: Median XL was so problematic for me that I am able to run it only in the desktop mode (because I must launch it through Protontricks every single time), that is why it misses the performance overlay.
"How did you manage to run it?" - Well, since I am no Linux master, my methods are very rudimentary. I basically install the old game on a PC, copy it to a USB stick and then to my Steam Deck and then try running it with the common methods and see what happens.
