Frank's understanding of human nature coming for a European view of the world, and a rich European view at that, is very telling about the way he describes the cottagers. He statement about them not being rich when they had servants is ridiculous. They weren't poor just because they lived in a small house. A theme throughout the book is rich people telling other people that they aren't rich when they obviously are.
