Yates would later explain that he had received the wounds when he rescued a stray cat and brought into his apartment, Ming had pounced on the smaller feline and Yates had jumped between them getting badly mauled in the process…

In addition to the tiger, lion cubs and alligator reports from neighbors suggest that Yates at various points in time also housed a bear cub, a hyaena and llama. In the report I read he did not deny these claims.

Yates bought the lion and tiger cubs from a now defunct private zoo and animal sanctuary that was operated as a front for illegal exotic animal sales. They also sold meat and pelts to buyers and collectors including white tiger.

Yates was released after serving three months, and subsequently he sued New York City for the loss of his pets (including a rabbit) and for $7,000 cash which he claimed had also been in the apartment. A judge dismissed the case, calling him full of "chutzpah". According to Yates, the

suit was dismissed because it would have revealed the New York City Housing Authority had not been conducting required quarterly inspections of the apartment, as records had stated.
