Timber is an achievement that has existed since base Thyme Flies, at least on the Steam version. While the achievement isn’t the most difficult one to get, its vague description can make how to do it unclear. In addition, there are some other factors that need to be considered when going for this achievement.

Obviously, in order to get this achievement you are required to kill all of the Tree Guardians. However, you are never told that there are exactly eight you need to kill, one per biome.

Of course, none of these are immediately apparent in regards to their specific location. You’ll have to find them by picking up and following each biome’s Golden Pupa. You’ve likely already seen these before, but may not understand how they work. These are randomly dropped by clearing enemy camps, with every camp having a chance to drop the one for that biome. Sometimes you may find the drop right away, but other times you won’t. This just means you will have to keep clearing camps in that biome until you find its guaranteed Pupa.

Now, there’s an important bug that needs to be acknowledged here. There is a bug involving leaving a Golden Pupa on the ground then returning to town. If you do this, even accidentally, that given Golden Pupa will permanently despawn. If this happens you will be unable to find the Tree Guardian for that biome and subsequently fail this achievement for that run. And no, re-exploring the entire biome won’t solve anything. This is the bug that the developer has been informed of, and he has stated that he’ll try to get it fixed in a future update. By the time you’re watching this that may already be the case, but for now keep this in mind.

Once you find the Golden Pupas there’s still the matter of killing the Tree Guardians. The basic Desert and Plains ones are the weakest, having the lowest health. Simply shoot at them while moving out of the way before they jump on you. Simply repeat this a few times and you’ll kill the Guardian easily. The basic Jungle and Tundra ones, while similar, are more tanky than their Desert and Plains brethren. Regardless, they feature the same strategy of shooting and moving.

The Tier II Tree Guardians are the ones that will give you more trouble. First, the Tier II Desert Guardian has a triad of short bullet ropes that never dissipate, making for more things to dodge. The Tier II Desert Guardian also marks the start of Guardians spawning with enemies at their side. For this one, it’s best to take out the copters before they hit you and then focus on the Guardian.

The Tier II Tundra Tree Guardian is similar to this, but has longer and faster moving bullet ropes. Either keep at a distance or move with the ropes while fighting this Guardian.

Unlike the Tier II Desert and Tundra Tree Guardians, the Tier II Plains one does not feature ropes of bullets. Instead, it features wooden projectiles that slowly close inwards, forcing you to be closer to the miniboss. You can either destroy these and exit or bear with being up close and personal with the Tree Guardian. It’s important to note that this boss has snake allies that you’ll want to kill before they become a bother.

The final Tree Guardian is the Tier II Jungle one, and it is probably the most dangerous one. Like the Tier II Plains one, it too has snake allies by its side. More importantly though, it also features wooden bullets that will surround you. However, these ones are capable of spinning, making them even more of a threat despite still being destructible. You’ll want to kill this Guardian as quick as possible to limit potential damage from it.

The game does offer a way to keep track through something that is often overlooked. While in the inventory screen you’ll notice a map in the bottom right hand corner. This map becomes more detailed as you explore biomes. Whenever you kill a Tree Guardian a flower will be denoted on the map, signifying that it has been defeated. You can use this to help keep track of what Tree Guardians you have defeated and which ones are still alive.
