A Township Tale: First Look Part 1 Tutorial Island - HTC Vive
A Township Tale is a deep and wonderful bug filled mess! It has all the expected issues of a pre-alpha title and all the wonder of an exciting and interesting new world to explore!
There are definitely some problems with the game.
There needs to be a bit more explanation in the tutorials for starters. I spent way to long trying to figure out how to learn to chop trees. Building fires or learning which tools are useful for what tasks should have a bit more guidance. Not necessarily hand holding through the game but there should be some in the first hour or so to teach the player the laws of the universe so to speak.
There is a significant amount of server lag when traversing the world. Watching other players stutter slide around the world really highlights the issue. I would occasionally see player bodies freeze for several seconds before resuming animation. This becomes much more evident in part 2 when we get to the main server.
Goals, right now seem like they're a bit lacking however as a sandbox you're supposed to make your own goals. At lower level your primary goal is to stay alive and get stronger. Once you get to end game though, you may be wandering around aimlessly until Alta adds some end game content. This is on the roadmap however so I'm excited to see what we get.
Again, pre-alpha, set expectations accordingly. Most of these things are just related to the game being early in development.
If you have issues with sharing... Well, you get 6 personal bank slots. Other than that, everything you do is communal. This could be a pro or a con depending on your outlook. I'm a selfish, only child who never learned to share... So I'd like a bit more personal space. That being said in Part 2 I pick up a random blue giant X pattern axe that I could never hope to have made my first day. Pros and cons to all things.
When you add physics to games, things always get weird somewhere. ATT is no exception to this. Especially in VR where the physics will cause your digital hand to be in a different position than your physical hands. ATT handles this wonderfully though in that you get white ghost hands that appear so you can still see where your physical hands are as your digital hands try to catch up. This helps eliminate that disconnect that can happen and works wonderfully.
Even with all of the pre-alpha issues, ATT blew me away with the detail in the world. Your avatars eyes track whatever you're looking at. You avatars mouth moves when you talk. This means when you're interacting with people online, you're making eye contact and it just feels more real. Creating a fire by placing tinder, adding wood and then striking to flint together to make sparks. Most of the actions I saw in the game followed this level of detail and I'll say again, I was blown away.
The game was also pretty beautiful. The scope of the world around you, the mountains in the distance that looked as if you could actually get to and scale them! I don't have any issues with the graphics in Orbus however looking at the games side by side, ATT definitely takes the W here. The only thing I would complain about is the noses...
The game audio was also pretty great. I loved the ambient noises of forest life or the wind whipping through a mountain pass. Everything about this game seems to be designed to pull you in and immerse you in the world and most of the audio works wonderfully towards that purpose. Except for the munching sound... That's just comical.
With some more polish and perhaps some beefier servers, ATT could very well be our 'next gen' VR MMO. At the wonderful price of FREE, there's little reason why anyone shouldn't give this game a try. Just remember, pre-alpha. Set expectations accordingly!
