Abducted (2017 version) - Early Access Watcher -
Disclosure: This game copy was provided by the developer via Curator Connect.
Aliens have abducted you and taken you away to some far off region of the universe. You manage to wake up in a strange environment with a computer AI implanted into your arm and some mysterious abilities now at your disposal. Explore the environment, manipulate your surroundings and use the mythical Dreamscape to discover a way off the planet and hopefully make it back home.
I should mention I have a little bit of a history with this game, mainly with the original Radiance build that felt a lot better than this revamped build. I am going to refrain from comparing the two completely, but I will say the leap to the Unreal 4 engine has made it feel less action based. It just looks like many of the same walking simulators I have played this year from the metallic look of the textures to the open environments.
It also doesn't help that the controls feel like they were ripped straight out of Resident Evil with more emphasis put on the directional feedback. Jumping, moving and even shooting are clunky with the last feature mentioned lacking a reliable aiming mechanic. I don't have much of an issue with the lack of direction assistance with objectives, but I do have a major issue with the short levels with completely random transitioning. It doesn't help that the game is still incredibly short for the cost.
This whole experience was quite depressing given how I enjoyed the original concept and while I am glad to see the developer is working on it again, it just feels like a massive step backwards. I will be updating the curate to mention the active development, but I cannot see any real reason to purchase this one. The story has some interesting ideas hidden away in the ARM AI, but one of the core principles to a game (let alone a walking simulator) is how a story can be shown instead of told, which is the major downside to this title.
