About "what if" skeptics and striking power in weapon sparring
The video I'm referring to (sudden overhand spear throw in a sword fight): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyaB6KQbksM
Quite often when people see a particular martial arts technique they ask lots of "what if" questions. "What if he does this?" "What if you miss?" Etc. However, it's important to understand that there is no such thing as an unbeatable technique. With the correct timing there is always a counter. And if your opponent acts in a way that defeats what you were attempting, you'll do something else. It sounds very obvious, but sometimes it's easy to get overly focused on the particular sequence of actions that is shown in a demonstration or in sparring and then imagine ways in which it could fail.
Also, viewers sometimes criticize the intensity of a sparring match, saying that a certain hit would not have been fatal because it's too weak. But that's the nature of sword practice with a partner, he do not wish to seriously injure each other for real. And we don't have several thousands of dollars to spend on a custom fitted full suit of armor, so 100% ferocious, brutal attacks are simply not desirable, even with nylon practice swords.
