As they land at Heierlank AFB, Wardog Squadron is ordered to take the airmen stationed there to Sand Island in order to bolster the base's defensive capabilities as their exploits in the opening phases of the war, described by Albert Genette, have garnered them a reputation of experienced fighter pilots. Due to this and the airmens' inexperience with mid-air refueling, the group is forced to stop at every allied base to resupply. Upon stopping at McNealy AFB, Wardog Squadron is given a new assignment; Fly over to Basset Space Center and protect it from Yuktobanian assault as SSTO craft containing a weapon module for Arkbird is to be launched from the center's mass driver in order to turn Arkbird, a vessel originally designed for space exploration, into an offensive weapon capable of firing precise laser strikes from the Earth's orbit...
