Even after how much I've played this game, I keep on learning. Credit to Adarsh Senthil (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmS-brStrTqU9nDFwEskxnw) who pointed out in a comment this was possible. Frankly, it never crossed my mind: I just rushed to destroy them while they were targetable every time.

It sounds obvious if you think about it and has known precedents in the AC series - but then again, so are there precedents for whole unit groups just disappearing on a mission update.
