Turns out I did it on my first attempt. It's manageable, so long as you avoid a turn fight - as you can see by the trouble I had with the last Alect. With weaker aircraft, you have to resist the temptation to dogfight: you'll lose every single time. If you don't have maneuverability, use speed. Throttle up, never let go, never be surrounded, use head-on attacks, and pick the stray sheep from the flock. Classic boom and zoom.
