Ace's Gaming Session - Time Pilot '84 for the Konami Dual 6809-Based arcade hardware
It's been a crazy year with all that's been going on, and I couldn't even get anything done in the period between July and now, but there is still something that must be done on this channel every year to close it out, and that's choose a game and play it to the best of my ability. This year, it's Time Pilot '84, which doesn't seem to be as well known as the original Time Pilot. It's honestly a bit of a lazy game compared to the original, but it is a much more visually pleasing game with far more detailed assets, very nice use of the color palette to simulate different lighting based on the time of day and a significant increase in difficulty over the original. I personally have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this game, not so much because of the game itself, but because of its hardware (read on and you'll know why). In any case, we're closing out 2020 with a 2-credit playthrough of Time Pilot '84 attempting to set the highest possible score and get as far as I can in the game.
Played on my MiSTer using my very own Time Pilot '84 core. For those who don't know, I am a developer on the MiSTer project focusing on arcade games, with Time Pilot '84 following my first core for the platform release in 2019, Arkanoid. This is where the love-hate relationship with Time Pilot '84 comes in as the game's hardware was a real challenge to properly recreate in the Cyclone V FPGA used by MiSTer.
This, however, is just the beginning of my work on MiSTer; there are many more arcade cores to come from me with the primary focus being on Konami games with a few more from the likes of Sega and Taito thrown into the mix.
