#AD | NSO Goldeneye - Secret Agent 18 main missions using the N64 Switch controller.
Labelled as #AD as I was given a Switch Compatible N64 controller by Nintendo UK. Not a paid sponsor.
So I wasn't planning to produce yet another Goldeneye video but a few interesting things happened in the second half of February.
I was on my journey to Sweden to attend European Speedrunner Assembly Winter 2023, my first on-site event since Summer 2019. I checked my e-mails and I got a message from the 1UP team on behalf of Nintendo UK :o
They loved my recent Goldeneye content and thought it would be okay to send me a Nintendo Switch compatible N64 controller for me to try out the NSO version.
I sent some replies to them including delivery address and once I got back from Sweden I can confirm the controller is genuine.
This is actually the first time in my 16 year video producing history that I got some kind of attention from Nintendo UK.
So on the weekend sometime after the speedrun event I livestreamed and raw recorded my playthrough.
My initial thoughts on this:
NSO version of the game:
Yes it's nice that it runs notably smoother than original N64 hardware except the stage Caverns for some reason, that one runs just as bad as the original. The Xbox version doesn't have this problem.
Digital Foundry confirmed that the game runs at around 25-29 FPS making it less stable than Xbox version but it is running uncapped so the logo sequence as seen when booting up the game runs it at a full 60fps.
Having save states does make tougher levels more manageable as by default it lacks checkpoints, I did use some and spliced off the failed attempts to cut down the video when doing Control and Caverns.
NS N64 Controller:
It's neat to play retro games with a controller that uses identical buttons to the on-screen prompts lol but I did notice the deadzone aiming difference with the analogue stick. This is mostly evident in the later stages including Depot, Control and Cradle where getting the ideal aiming adjustment was way harder than it should have been.
A reddit post has confirmed the comparisons:

So I should make a clear disclaimer that the Nintendo Switch N64 controller was provided to me by NintendoUK.
