The "Too Long, Didn't Watch" Review:
Steep learning curve. Sky high difficulty. Permadeath. TON of replayability. Short on Graphics, Audio.
3/5 but a MUST if you're a rogue-like fan.
The "Meat & Potatoes" Review:
This has been a very difficult game for me to review. It is a solid game. I am totally getting the hang of it just fine and enjoy the genre. However, these controls are still stuck in 1994. The graphics and sound are too. But wait, there is a LOT more to this game. First, the character creation alone is immensely deep. It's really great. Oh sure, you can randomize your hero/anti-hero (yup, you can be evil. why not?), their class, race, stats. You can also choose them yourself. There are quite a few to choose from. Even better, you go through a nice little quiz (or you can randomize this too) to determine some things about your character. This makes for tons of different combos and ways to play the game. I absolutely LOVE this aspect of this game. It is straight RPG with it's abilities, talents, etc. right down to rating them by dice roll and modifier. The controls though. It takes a long time to master these controls. SO much going on all over the keyboard. I feel like some of this could be somewhat simplified, but maybe I am wrong. There really is an crazy amount of depth to this little rogue-like. Fully fleshed out tons and NPC's to be found. All in all, for your average gamer there is a lot to consume here. This is not light gaming at all. More like a Paradox game or Wargaming (a la Ageod games, etc.) there is a lot to master before being able to fully enjoy this game. As you unlock all of this though, it is very rewarding.
Avg. gamer score would rate out at a 2/5. If you take your time with this one and learn it well, or are already a fan of real rogue-likes though, you'll find this to be a 4/5. Let's split the difference and call it 3/5.
Happy Gaming!!!
