At the time, I had determined that I needed more tech in order to keep progressing through the game, but in actuality, I already had what I needed to progress: the engines and bridge. To get more resources, I need to be able to fly from planet to planet and collect stuff from the planets. If I run out of the vital resources on my ship, I got to dismantle parts of it to get the resources I need. Dismantle enough of it though... yeah we'd be at a stand still
