1My Thoughts Of The Game:
Before Resident Evil 4 came out for the PS2 in late of 2005, the only survival horror game that came close at the time was Cold Fear. Cold Fear was an interesting beast. Developed by the people who brought you Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare back in 2001, Darkworks, Cold Fear is a survival horror game with similar gameplay style from Resident Evil 4 and the original Resident Evil series.
Set in a desolate Russian whaler ship, you play as a US Coast Guard named Tom Hansen who receives a distress call and proceeds to investigate the ship. After a while in the game, you realize that the ship has been attacked by some bio-weapon that's infecting humans and you have to find a way to stop it. Sound familiar doesn't it?
The game did have some cool stuff going on and wanted to try something slightly different. First, it incorporated the over the shoulder and a slight fixed camera angle style. What's interesting is that it can be toggled between those two at the press of a button. On paper, this sounds like an awesome idea to have and I was definitely on board. Unfortunately upon actual practice, the only usable camera angle was the over the shoulder. Like Resident Evil 4, it allowed you to view and aim at any body part of the target for strategic shooting.
The other thing the game had was the dynamic swaying of the boat. When the player was outside of the ship, the violent wind and waves of the ocean would sway the ship causing the player to try to maintain their balance. This made gunfights much more challenging. Even more, if a wave would hit the player, it would cause them damage. And vice versa to NPC and enemies. Once the player was inside the ship, the swaying would continue but it was less intense.
Overall, I think this game was a fun ride with lots of potential. Funny story, I never beaten the game. I got up to the last boss but was out of ammo and died. They don't call this survival horror for nothing. Most likely I'll jump back to this game to finally put it to rest. In this video, I just show a brief gameplay of myself.
