Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX is a remake of the Sega Master System Game, with the same name, except for the DX. A Deluxe version it is indeed. Not only did it stay faithful to the original game, it also adds some new levels and it also reworks the boss fights, so that they are more interesting.
The major change is the graphic style, music and sound effects and i think the dev team really nailed the job. You can switch between the classic and modern mode on the fly, i think in some levels it's beneficial to play it it classic mode, since some foreground elements hides enemies or projectiles.
Back to the core of the game. Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a Sidescrolling platformer. A hard one also, the controls are true to the original, so they are still a bit slippery. So controlled jumps needs some practice. The Hitbox of your attack is short, but the enemies are slow, so that you can also spam the attack button. The game was a bit ahead of it's time, with many secrets to find. Also you have powerups that you can use to deal with some tricky situations. Funny is, that the Master Systems Controller didn't have a Select or Start Button, so to access the pause screen, you had to press the big Pause Button on the consol itself.
Here comes something i wish they would've changed in this version. You still have a Pause screen, but there is no Inventory. To use an item, you have to cycle through your Inventory on the upper right of the screen. This still works, but it's live in the battle and you might get killed by looking away from the action and see what item you pick.
Also the items don't have any description. The same goes for the original game, but there you at least had the booklet, which described the items.
So they could've made an Pause - Inventory screen, with a description for each item. I know that Orb A causes Alex to drop an Orb on the ground, that spawns multiple miniature Alex's, that attacks the enemy (even if that didn't seem to work on one of the bosses.), but a new player has no idea what the orb does. And if you use such an item, the item is gone, so experimenting around with it will cause the loss of such an item.
Okay this is one of the games where i'm not sure if i should rate it for kids or not. It's easy to pick up but hard to master. It requires to face failure but also offers continues on the levels to progress the game, but without the items or money.
The graphic style is and where more targeting a younger audience and i played this game as a kid. So i will put this on the "for kids" list.
But like most games, this one can be enjoyed by all generations.
