Alien Breed 3D 2:The Killing Grounds is a Team 17 exploration shooter, where we take control of a deep space Commando, intent on surviving many tortuous levels of blasting action. This was a Doom beater on the Amiga; although very few Amiga's could actually run it very quickly.

Lets start with the elephant in the room. Team 17 released two versions of this game, a 2MB AGA version - cut down to run on expanded Amigas, like an expanded A1200 or A4000. They also released a 4MB AGA version, with a higher frame, and more sounds and stuff going on. That being said, AB3D2 was notorious as needing the kind of speed from an Amiga that we almost never got. Along came PPC and then at last we could play the 4MB version at somewhere near full speed. This was played on an emulated A4000 040 setup, with emulated JIT, using WinUAE; which is an easy way to Max the power of a the machine so we can check this out at its best.

This is one of those game where, if you know the enemies and how to avoid them, you can make good progress by restarting the game and playing it again from scratch. I played it twice, and each time got a bit further on level 3. This was my third attempt, and this time I didnt get totally lost and spend ages plodding around, and having to watch the longplay videos in desperation. This time it went mostly okay.

I wanted to add a Comparison Zone to this film but I forgot to edit it into the original narration. When it came to adding it in post production, I felt I enjoyed the soundscape of the different game more than anything I could have said at this point, so I just left that bit un-narrated.

This was one of the first true 60fps captured game I have ever recorded, as I finally sorted out a bug caused by my monitor settings outputting at only 59.9fps. This caused the games (like Powerdrome and Fire and Ice last year) to appear to stutter every few seconds, which was annoying. The footage came out really smoothly, and so did Gloom - although you cant really see that Breathless probably had this bug.

According to HOL, the sound effects were by Bjørn Lynne; although I only just found this out.

Alien Breed 3D 2: The Killing Grounds certainly lives up to its name, as around every corner you can expect something to leap out and try to kill you. This builds up the tension when exploring, and can lead to so frantic moments if your fingers are fumbling for the strafe buttons. Even with the controls remapped to a modern control pad, the key to success is always to strafe out and take cheap pot shots at the enemies, conserving that precious health, and there is never a time when the player feels able to run around gung ho.

The levels are of a size which needs memorising, so the player doesnt get much opportunity to fluke a run and gun victory; unlike Breathless, Gloom and Doom. Instead the action always feels a bit on the challenging side, requiring keys to open doors, which can often lead to wandering around looking for the right door. Some of the weapons, like the bouncy grenade launcher, can be a lot of fun - especially if angle a shot to bounce off a doorway and into a room. Some feel under-powered, and good luck hitting anything with the weedy Blaster. The long reload times of the shotgun really prevent you from getting too far ahead of yourself, leading to endlessly dodging projectiles from enemy ambushes.

I did enjoy this title, and was impressed by the atmospheric sound and lighting effects. I feel with just one more go, I'd be on to the next level no problem. There is also a serial link-up option, if you fancy a death match! That being said, I feel they could have made better use of the music, as a pumping acid-house soundtrack could have been fantastic. More importantly, this suffers from not having an Easy option, for those who just want to dive in and shoot stuff, without the harsh damage taken from enemies, and the limited ammo. Overall I'd say this has the charm of some of the other shooters we've seen, although the difficulty involved prevents me from giving this game more than 8 out of 10.
