Take 'Em Out is a fixed screen pop-up target shooter from 1989; the first and only game from Swedish developers Jan Slott and Michel Nass. I have fond memories of this title, although I never managed to beat it. Is this a plastic duck?, or will it blow you away?

Production Notes:
===============
Recorded: 22nd June 2016 (level 1 only, 50fps A500), 7th March 2018 (cheated, 50fps A1200)
Narrated: 30th April 2021
Edited: 20th June 2018, and 20-28th Sept 2021

This game was recorded for the 2016 Sheet Em Ups themes series, along with many others. Eventually I decided not to release this because there were already too many great games in series 3. I recorded some more footage in 2018, for series 5, and here were are in series 6.

I had a cracked copy of this back in the day, and it was one of those games which was floating around basically as shareware. I also remember Escape From Colditz around this time - and games which ordinarily people probably wouldnt get to play; because they were not bought, or not commonly available in stores. In those days I memorised the whole game, and at one point I was good enough to reach the third scenario, but never managed to beat this without the cheat. In the footage, I was maybe only 3 or 4 guys short of completing the first level, so its actually not so hard if you can be already on the spot to take em out as they appear.

Take 'Em Out has many of the hallmarks of the classic Amiga scene. Sampled sound effects, graphics probably from D-Paint, some silly humour, and big OTT explosions. This feels polished but also kind of homebrew at the same time. Nothing really stands out as amazing, but together it combines to make an enjoyable experience. Difficulty is a bit on the hard side, and requires memorising the attack patterns. There are only 3 scenarios, plus two sets of clay pigeon shooting stages, and a qualification tour of the rifle range. For me it was always one of those titles which I would cheat my way through it and have a fairly fun time doing it. Of course, this is no HAM mode digitised shoot-out like Lethal Enforcers on the Megadrive, or a 3D rail shooter like Virtua Cop, but for it's time and it's day, Take 'Em Out has that certain Amiga goodness that typified the scene. It is also not as frustratingly difficult as many other shooters - like Die Hard 2 on the Amiga. Overall I guess it deserves a solid 6. Not as bad as Bloody Afternoon or Beast Busters, but not so great that you'll be rushing home to play it.
