25"Long time ago, eight arrogant gods always found each other's faults which annoyed the Celestial World. Finally Celestial the age demoted and excelled (sic) them as eight fighters in the mundane world. They were expected to discipline themselves with enormous mundane experiences and challenges then serve as eight loyal guards in the Celestial World after completing their toils."
The fighters to choose from are:
Nic-San (Huáng Fēi Hóng) - Historical Chinese martial artist, based on Jet Li's portrayal of real-life folk hero Huáng Fēi Hóng in the Once Upon a Time in China film series.
Jean Paul (Shén Lóng, "Dragon God") - Ninja.
Stevareno (Qiān Miàn Rén, "Man of a Thousand Faces") - Shape-shifting mutant.
Drew (Hēi Jié Kè, "Blackjack") - Clown.
Dougster (Pī Lì Jū, "Thunderbolt Colt") - American Football athlete.
Fang (Huī Láng, "Gray Wolf") - Werewolf.
Burnie (Huǒ Zhuā Lí, "Flaming Wildcat") - Flame mutant.
Melanie (Huā Mù Lán) - Ancient Chinese general, based on the folk heroine Huā Mùlán.
Claus (Xiān Wēng, "Old Sage") - Ancient Chinese martial artist, final boss, playable with cheat code.
Alien Challenge plays like a standard six-button fighting game (with three punches A/B/C and three kicks D/E/F, each of different strengths).
Optionally, operators can use DIP switches to make it a three-button (B/E/C, with B+E as A and E+C as D) or four-button game (A/D/C/F).
Notable mechanics in this game include:
A universal dodge technique similar to The King of Fighters '94, where players can put themselves in a state where they avoid all attacks (shown by flashing red) by pressing A+B. (A+D in the 4-button version, B+E+C in the 3-button version)
A super move system similar to Fatal Fury 2, in which players can perform a unique and powerful attack when their lifebar flashes. This occurs either after losing ~60% of their health or by collecting a special power-up.
A power-up system similar to Samurai Shodown, in which players can collect a power-up falling from the center of the screen (by attacking it) to heal ~10% of their vitality. One of these power-ups, an open can of spinach, also allows the player to perform a super move.
