8The 2024 BMW X5 is the newest iteration of BMW's renowned midsize luxury SUV. As it steps into its fifth generation, the X5 seamlessly blends the luxury, tech, and performance that one anticipates from a top-tier BMW vehicle. The 2024 model year introduces subtle exterior design tweaks and an expanded roster of standard driver assistance tools.
Visually, the 2024 X5 maintains a familiar silhouette, reminiscent of its predecessors. The front showcases a slightly revamped design, featuring a more prominent twin kidney grille, redesigned headlights, and a fresh bumper. The rear also undergoes minor updates, including modernized taillights and a revamped tailgate. These changes, while understated, lend a contemporary flair to the vehicle.
The interior exudes luxury with a design that prioritizes the driver. The available versions are the base xDrive40i, the sportier M50i, and the eco-friendly plug-in hybrid xDrive45e. The standard configuration offers seating for five, but an optional third row can accommodate two more passengers. The dashboard is adorned with BMW's newest iDrive infotainment system, coupled with a digital instrument cluster.
Under the hood, the xDrive40i boasts a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, delivering 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. The M50i variant is powered by a robust twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, churning out 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid xDrive45e combines the inline-six with an electric motor, producing a total of 389 horsepower. All models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the xDrive40i offers 20 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on highways, and a combined 22 mpg. The M50i's ratings stand at 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and an 18 mpg combined average. The xDrive45e, being a plug-in hybrid, can cover an impressive 30 miles solely on electric power before the gasoline engine takes over.
The X5's ride is plush and silent. The optional two-axle air suspension ensures superior shock absorption and stability. Despite its size, the X5's steering is precise, and its handling remains agile. Its off-roading capabilities are enhanced with the xOffroad package, and it can tow a commendable 7,200 pounds.
The interior can be further customized with amenities like multi-contour heated and ventilated seats, quad-zone climate control, wireless charging, and an adjustable air suspension. A vast panoramic moonroof amplifies the cabin's spaciousness, and with the rear seats folded, the cargo space expands to 71.1 cubic feet.
For the 2024 model year, the X5 sees a modest price hike. The base xDrive40i begins at $62,000, with an additional $1,095 for destination charges. The M50i's starting price is $86,800, while the xDrive45e is priced at $70,500.
