36Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled the Rolls-Royce Amethyst Droptail, a coachbuilt masterpiece that is a tribute to its commissioning client's cultural heritage, family legacy, and personal passions. This unique vehicle is an embodiment of the client's refined tastes, global perspective, and deep-rooted heritage. Torsten Müller-Ötvös, the Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, emphasized the profound collaboration between the client and Rolls-Royce Coachbuild, resulting in a historic expression of applied art.
The Amethyst Droptail is one of four distinct expressions of the Rolls-Royce Droptail. Commissioned by a patron whose family business evolved from a gemstone boutique to a global corporation, the car is a reflection of the client's diverse inspirations. This patron, a connoisseur of art, has a collection of precious jewels, significant motor cars, and contemporary artworks, all housed in a custom-built private museum. The design of the Droptail was inspired by the amethyst gem, symbolizing purity, clarity, and resilience, and resonates with the client's penchant for subtle artistry and intricate details.
Externally, the car's design was influenced by the Globe Amaranth wildflower, native to the desert near one of the client's residences. The duotone exterior paint captures the flower's bloom stages, with the main body showcasing a soft purple hue, named Globe Amaranth, enhanced with powdered aluminum flecks. This is contrasted by a deep purple Amethyst paint on the upper coachwork, which contains a blend of mica flakes, creating a unique mauve color with a metallic sheen.
The car's detailing is a testament to the client's trust in Rolls-Royce's artisans. The Pantheon grille treatment, suggested by the client's son, is a blend of hand-brushed and hand-polished finishes. The front end features a Spirit of Ecstasy figurine surrounded by amethyst cabochons, a nod to the client's early ventures in the gemstone business.
The interior of the Amethyst Droptail celebrates materials personally curated by the client and his family. The selection began with a sample of Calamander Light open-pore wood, inspiring the car's leather treatment. The primary leather hue, named Amethyst, complements the exterior and is finished with a pearlescent lacquer. The interior wood parts underwent rigorous testing to ensure durability in various climates. The interior also features rotary dials adorned with rare amethyst gems, shaped in a convex cabochon style.
The car's design includes a removable hard top, giving the Droptail two distinct characters: an open-top roadster and a dramatic coupé. The roof incorporates electrochromic glass that can change its color and transparency, aligning with the colorway of the Amethyst Droptail.
A unique feature of the Amethyst Droptail is its singular timepiece, commissioned from the renowned Swiss haute horlogerie maison, Vacheron Constantin. Named ‘Les Cabinotiers Armillary Tourbillon,’ this handmade piece from Geneva has a bi-retrograde display and a bi-axial tourbillon. The timepiece's design harmoniously integrates with the car's aesthetics.
