11The all-new 2024 Mercedes-AMG SL63 arrives as a completely redesigned version of the iconic SL roadster. With a new AMG-developed platform, folding fabric roof, and aggressive styling, Mercedes is positioning the SL63 as a serious performance convertible. However, after driving it, we're left scratching our heads about what exactly this car is trying to be.\n\nUnder the long hood lies AMG's brilliant 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 pumping out a stout 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Power routes through a nine-speed automatic to an advanced 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. The powertrain is an absolute gem, delivering explosive acceleration with a glorious V8 soundtrack. Mercedes says 0-60 mph happens in just 3.5 seconds. On a fun road, the SL63 has moves thanks to quick steering and the sophisticated AMG Ride Control suspension.\n\nUnfortunately, the SL63's firm ride borders on unrefined over rough pavement. Expansive road noise penetrates the cabin as well, characteristics ill-suited for a flagship grand tourer. Yet the cramped rear jump seats, busy interior design with fussy controls, and constrained trunk suggest the SL63 was never intended to be a traditional GT car.\n\nThe cabin tech is a particular letdown, with the overreliance on touch controls and configurability being more distracting than helpful. Counterintuitively, Mercedes even makes operating the folding roof unnecessarily complicated through touchpad gestures and menus. Premium materials abound, but the execution lacks cohesion.\n\nWith a base price of around $180,000, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG SL63 exists in a rarified space without a clearly defined purpose. It's too stiffly sprung for grand touring with insufficient luxury accommodations. Yet it's not quite sporting enough to be an outright performance convertible alternative to rivals like the Porsche 911 Cabriolet.\n\nMercedes seems to have diluted the SL's identity in hopes of positioning it as a Mercedes-AMG GT roadster replacement. But does anyone really want a more compromised, costlier version of that already niche model?
