Red stars are used for progression in this game. Well, sort of, since after the first two, they don't really do much. But what you may not know is that the majority of the red stars in the game don't actually "count". They might count towards the star total, but the game doesn't treat them as red. So this video shows all the ones that actually do get tracked as proper red stars, including a couple that aren't even red.

Here's a list of all the "fake" red stars, that just count as normal yellow ones when collected: (Some of these are duplicates of other stars, as well)

- Parallel Basement - in box on other end of underwater tunnel (next to pipe to Parallel Lobby)
- Floor 3B - from Toad in multicolored boxes room
- Floor 3B - in box in multicolored boxes room
- Bowser's Castle - from Toad (night only)
- Checkerboard (teleport from Uncanny Courtyard with 30+ stars)
- Bowser's Checkered Madness - in box in second room
- The Star - collect 5 silver stars
- Shadow Fortress - reach top of level in less than 40 seconds
- Ice-Cold Warzone - top of mountain
- Whomp's Kingdom - defeat King Whomp
- Bowser's Airship - defeat Bowser
