"Altered Beast" is a side-scrolling, platform, beat 'em up game that was developed and published by Sega in 1988. The game is set in Ancient Greece and follows a centurion who has been resurrected by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena from the demon Neff. The player battles undead creatures and monsters resembling those from Greek mythology. The centurion can collect three spirit balls on each level, the last of which transforms him into a powerful beast. These beasts include a werewolf, a thunder weredragon, a werebear, a weretiger, and the more powerful golden werewolf. Each beast has its own abilities, such as the dragon's flight and lightning, and the bear's petrification. After becoming the beast, the character can face the end-level boss. The game has five levels and can be played by up to two players simultaneously. It was the pack-in game for the Sega Genesis when that system launched in 1988. The game has been re-released several times for various consoles and has been developed into two sequels. Despite its mixed reviews, mainly targeting the game's gameplay and graphics, "Altered Beast" remains a classic in the Sega Genesis library.
