This article discusses a recent, unannounced change in the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card, where the memory type has been updated from SK Hynix GDDR6 to Samsung GDDR6.
Historically, the RX 9070 XT has been noted for high memory temperatures, particularly in models sold closer to the MSRP. The SK Hynix memory used in these cards could reportedly exceed 85°C under heavy load, raising concerns about potential long-term reliability.
The introduction of Samsung's GDDR6 memory appears to offer improved thermal performance, especially observed in Asian markets. Initial reviews and comparisons suggest that the Samsung memory leads to significantly lower temperatures. Custom RX 9070 XT cards using Samsung memory have reportedly stayed at or below 75°C during demanding benchmarks like Furmark, without requiring increased voltage or reduced clock speeds. Several major manufacturers like Sapphire, XFX, and GIGABYTE have already started using Samsung's GDDR6 in their custom designs.
Despite these thermal benefits, AMD has not officially permitted its partners to advertise the difference between models using SK Hynix and Samsung memory. This is likely a strategy to prevent confusion among consumers and maintain a uniform product image.
The advantages of this memory update extend to quieter operation, as the cooler Samsung memory allows GPU fans to run at lower speeds while maintaining adequate cooling. This provides a better user experience without sacrificing performance. Additionally, the improved thermal headroom could potentially increase the lifespan of the GPU by reducing overall stress on the components.
While AMD has not publicly announced this memory change, there is speculation that future higher-end or "OC Edition" versions of the RX 9070 XT might exclusively use Samsung memory, while more budget-friendly models closer to the MSRP might continue with SK Hynix. This could potentially lead to a market segmentation based on the memory type, but AMD's official plans have not been confirmed.
