Ana is the new sniper-like support, the mother of Pharah, who reminds me of the badass Many Mothers from Mad Max Fury Road. Her main weapon is a biotic rifle which either damages enemies or heals allies. She can either shoot it as a linear projectile or scoped, but cannot get a headshot in either case. While her scoping animation is faster than Widowmakers, most of the time you will just want to shoot the projectiles as it’s pretty easy to hit and does the same amount of damage. I recommend only scoping when extremely far from the enemy.
Since each clip only has 6 darts and Ana will run out of ammo quickly if both shooting enemies and friendlies, it’s best to focus more on assisting your team. After all, Ana believes in defending the people she cares for!
Ana has no alternate fire or movement ability, so she can be left pretty vulnerable since any enemy will be able to reach her. Therefore it’s best to be not terribly far from your allies, but also not directly in the middle of a fight. She can fire a sleep dart from her side arm that will stun a target for up to five and a half seconds but will be cancelled if they take damage. This is basically Ana’s escape mechanism but it’s a little hard to hit so it will take some practice. It’s also useful for interrupting ultimates or stopping an enemy dead in their tracks who is pursuing your allies.
Biotic Grenade can be thrown a great distance and will explode on impact, dealing 60 damage to enemies and healing allies for 100 in a 4 meter radius. It’s the first ability in the game to prevent enemy healing and increase ally healing on those affected for 5 seconds. Try to have your biotic rifle fully loaded before using it so you can immediately start shooting your allies while the healing amount is increased.
Since the grenade has a 10 second cooldown it’s best to save it for a group fight in a small space, but occasionally it’s decent to use on Ana herself as she doesn’t have any shields or other ways to restore her own health.
Her ultimate, nano boost, increases an ally’s damage by 50%, movement speed by 30%, and decreases their incoming damage by 50% for 8 seconds. It has a lock-on targeter so you can’t miss it unlike her biotic rifle shots. This is really great to use in conjunction with ultimates of squishies that rely on mobility like Reaper using Death Blossom, Genji using Dragonblade, or Soldier 76 using Tactical Visor. It’s also awesome to use on tanks like Reinhardt or Winston whether or not they have an ultimate available as they will straight up steamroll the other team.
Overall Ana is fun to play and has a lot of utility, her nano boost by far being the most useful ability she has. I don’t see her being played as the sole healer on a team, but more of a niche pick in various circumstances.
