Video Transcript:
Widowmaker is the archetypal sniper, best suited for playing on the defensive side of maps rather than attack or control maps. Even on defense, she is only viable if consistently getting kills, which is why this is not footage of me playing because I’m a terrible sniper. Her sniper rifle will be the main source of damage output and is more deadly with the full one second charge. You should always charge it completely before firing unless a target is almost dead or about to take cover behind a wall. Never stay in one location for very long as enemies can tell where you are by the red laser emitted from using the scope.
When using the sniper sight, Widowmaker’s vision area is reduced, so pay attention to the sound of footsteps and whether or not it could be an enemy approaching. Try to prioritize taking out support heroes, then defense heroes, and lastly offense and tanks.
Grappling Hook will pull Widowmaker to wherever it lands if it’s a solid surface and she will maintain some of the momentum as she arrives, enabling additional mobility tactics. Jumping while grappling will cancel the ability and she will start falling down from that location. This will not reset the cooldown, but if you grapple and hit nothing it will. It has a bit of an auto aim so you can target slightly below a ledge and it will still connect to the top of it. Grappling Hook is useful for escaping close-range enemies, changing positions for sniping, or simply to return to a battle quicker.
Widowmaker’s Venom Mine will attach to the first solid surface it hits, arming itself after it lands. Upon being triggered, it will deal 75 poison damage to nearby enemies and Widowmaker herself, but not her allies. Place them in hard to see spots like ceilings or around corners to protect yourself while sniping. You should learn what it sounds like when a mine is triggered so you can tell if an enemy is flanking you, this way you can exit sniper mode and use your short to mid range assault rifle. You can only have one mine placed at a time, and like with Junkrat, you will see an indicator on your screen telling you if it has been destroyed or triggered.
Infra-Sight is her ultimate ability which allows your allies to see the whereabouts of the entire enemy team. Her high damage output results in her ultimate being available a lot, so you should generally use it immediately if your team is in combat. This can help you make better decisions about where you should go to set up camp for sniping. It is ESPECIALLY useful against Symmetra. When a teleporter is placed, your ally that is closest to it’s location is the one who announces it. If you can, immediately use your ultimate and locate Symmetra so your team can destroy the teleporter as quickly as possible.
