The Antonov An-2 is a Soviet-era biplane that was originally designed as a utility aircraft for use in agricultural and transportation applications. It was first flown in 1947 and was produced in large numbers until 1971. Even today, more than 70 years after its first flight, the An-2 remains in service in many parts of the world and is known for its ruggedness, versatility, and reliability.

The Antonov An-2 was designed by the Antonov Design Bureau, which was headed by Oleg Antonov. The initial design was based on the Polikarpov Po-2 biplane, which had been used extensively by the Soviet military during World War II. However, the An-2 was a much larger and more capable aircraft than the Po-2, with a wingspan of 18.2 meters and a maximum takeoff weight of 5,500 kg.

The An-2 was originally designed for use in agriculture, with the ability to carry up to 12 passengers or 1,500 kg of cargo in addition to the pilot and copilot. However, it quickly became clear that the aircraft had many other potential uses, including as a transport for troops and equipment, a parachute training aircraft, and a search and rescue platform.

The An-2 was produced in large numbers, with more than 18,000 examples being built in the Soviet Union and other countries. It was also licensed for production in China and Poland, where it was known as the PZL-Mielec An-2.

The An-2 is a high-wing, strut-braced biplane with a single radial engine mounted in the nose. The aircraft has a fabric-covered steel tube fuselage and wings, with wooden wing spars and ribs. The wings are designed to be easily removable for transportation and storage.

The aircraft has a fixed landing gear with large wheels, which allow it to operate from unimproved fields and rough terrain. The An-2 can also be equipped with floats or skis for operation on water or snow.

The cockpit of the An-2 is spacious and provides excellent visibility, with a large windshield and side windows. The aircraft is typically flown by a pilot and a copilot, with the copilot handling navigation and radio duties.
