In Apex Legends, before a match, players form squads of two or three players and select predefined characters with distinct abilities, known as "Legends". The game has two modes. In "Battle Royale", up to twenty three-person squads or thirty two-person duos land on an island and search for weapons and supplies before attempting to defeat all other players in combat. The available play area on the island decreases over time, forcing players to keep moving or stay outside the play area, which can be fatal. The last team alive wins the round. In "Arenas", players form into teams of three and battle another team in a 3v3 team playoff over a series of rounds to determine the winner of the match. Teams win when their team has at least three points and is two points ahead.
Apex Legends is set in the same sci-fi universe as Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall series, with various characters from this series appearing as secondary characters or playable legends. The game's development began around the end of 2016, although the project remained secret until its release. The game's 2019 release came as a surprise, as up until that point it was assumed that Respawn Entertainment was working on a third title in the Titanfall franchise, the studio's previous flagship game. Apex Legends received positive reviews from critics, who praised its gameplay, progression system, and fusion of elements from various genres.
